Riyadh Summit closing statement affirms support for Palestinians
The closing statement of the extraordinary Arab and Islamic Summit in Riyadh emphasised the central importance of the Palestinian cause and reaffirmed unwavering support for the Palestinian people to achieve their legitimate rights.
Foremost among those is the right to freedom and an independent state with sovereignty along the 1967 borders with East Jerusalem as its capital.
The statement also upheld the right of refugees to return and to receive compensation in line with international resolutions and condemned any attempts to deny or undermine these rights.
The statement warned against violations of the sovereignty of the Republic of Iraq, the Syrian Arab Republic and the Islamic Republic of Iran, especially amid the lack of decisive measures by the United Nations and the inaction of international legitimacy.
The statement called on all countries to prohibit the export or transfer of arms and ammunition to Israel. It also urged the UN Security Council to adopt a resolution compelling Israel to halt its unlawful policies that threaten regional peace and security and to enforce relevant UN resolutions regarding Jerusalem.
The statement condemned any party's recognition of Jerusalem as the capital of Israel.
It appealed to influential international parties to launch a step by step plan with a clear timeline, under international sponsorship, to end the Israeli occupation and establish a Palestinian state along the 1967 borders.
It affirmed that a just and comprehensive peace cannot be achieved without ending the Israeli occupation of all Arab territories along the 1967 borders.
The closing statement also called for continued support and urgent humanitarian aid for the Lebanese government to address the repercussions of the Israeli aggression, including support in tackling the displacement crisis.
