Sayyid Asaad participates in virtual G20 leaders' summit

On a directive from His Majesty Sultan Haitham bin Tarik Al Said, His Highness Sayyid Asaad bin Tarik Al Said, Deputy Prime Minister for International Relations and Cooperation Affairs and the Sultan's Special Representative, participated today in a virtual G20 Summit.

The summit, led by Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi, saw the participation of world leaders and heads of government.

Speaking to the summit, Sayyid Asaad shared a message from His Majesty, offering his congratulations on the G20 Leaders' Declaration in New Delhi. This focuses on financial stability, making globalisation work for all, environmental priorities, sustainable development goals, banking reforms, digitalisation, employment and amplifying the voice of developing nations in global decisions.

His Highness highlighted the African Union's new permanent membership in the G20, noting that this enhances the voice of developing nations and the Global South. He said Oman remained willing to cooperate with the G20 countries on implementing the New Delhi Declaration.

His Highness also spoke on the Palestinian issue. He reiterated Oman's support for the just Palestinian cause and their right to self-determination, within a two-state solution.

During the Summit the G20 leaders discussed a series of key issues. These included multilateral development banking, climate action, green financing, technological advancements, digital infrastructure and the empowerment of women in development pathways. They also discussed implementing the G20 Leaders' Summit Declaration for the benefit of people worldwide.

As well as His Highness Sayyid Asaad, the virtual summit was attended from the Sultanate by: Sayyid Badr Albusaidi, Oman's Foreign Minister; Khalifa bin Hamad Al Badi, Secretary-General of His Highness’s Office; Saif bin Ahmed Al Sawafi, Adviser in His Highness’s Office, and Ambassador Khalid Almusalhi, Foreign Ministry Undersecretary for Administrative and Financial Affairs.

The virtual summit of leaders of the Group of Twenty (G20) marks a culmination of the efforts of the Republic of India during its presidency of the G20 this year, before the presidency is transferred next year to the Federal Republic of Brazil.
