The Tunisian President, Kais Saied, head of the previous session of the Arab Summit, gave the opening speech in which he stressed the importance of the unity among Arabs and warned against disunity, expressing his hope that the Algiers Summit would contribute to resolving and addressing differences between Arab countries.
He said that the war in Ukraine exacerbated the food and energy security crisis and that terrorism, human trafficking and organised crime had a negative impact on Arab countries. He stressed the need to resolve all issues based on common international standards and that the Palestinian cause should be present on the agenda of conferences of all international groups.
The Tunisian president called on Libyans to strive for a comprehensive settlement and reunification, noting that the solution can only be Libyan. Looking to the future, he called for the preservation of Arab national security and finding a common will to search for answers to any problem facing the countries of the region.
President Saied urged the establishment of a robust joint Arab economic system, calling for practical projects to achieve self-sufficiency and defend the water security of Arab countries.
The Algerian President Abdelmadjid Tebboune, head of the current session of the Arab Summit, then delivered a speech in which he stressed that the summit is being held under highly complex regional and international conditions. He stressed the need to build an Arab economic bloc that preserves Arab common interests so that the Arab countries become an economic power in the international community.
The Algerian president called for adhering to Arab peace initiatives as the only way to achieve a just peace for the Palestinian cause and for a session of the United Nations General Assembly to grant Palestine full membership of the UN.
President Tebboune referred to the need to expedite the implementation of comprehensive reforms for the tools of joint Arab action, calling on Libyans, Syrians and Yemenis to engage in dialogue in order to reach consensual solutions to their internal issues.
In his speech, the Secretary General of the League of Arab States, Ahmed Aboul Gheit, indicated that the changes witnessed by the world have been unprecedented, making the current Arab summit essential to Arab positions and policies.
Aboul Gheit stated that the Arab region suffers from a serious threat to its food security, with most of its countries falling within the scope of water poverty noting that the current global situation exacerbates these problems.
