Oman stresses commitment to implementing Gaza ceasefire

28 March 2024

Oman stressed the need to implement the Security Council resolution calling for an immediate and sustainable ceasefire in the Gaza Strip.

The comments were made in a statement delivered by Ambassador Idris bin Abdul Rahman Alkhanjari, Oman's Permanent Representative to the United Nations in Geneva, before the 55th session of the Human Rights Council.

The Ambassador stressed Oman’s condemnation of war crimes, genocide, forced displacement, destruction and deliberate starvation committed by Israel.

He said this genocide was a dangerous escalation of a process that had lasted more than 70 years and could have been stopped a long time ago if the international community’s sincere efforts had been combined.

The Ambassador reiterated Oman's solidarity with Francesca Albanese, Special Rapporteur on the situation of human rights in the Palestinian Territory, who, he said, is exposed to pressures and obstacles like other officials who have chosen to follow the path of truth. He said Oman shared her conclusions and recommendations.

He said: “The scale of the crime practised and continued to be practised by the Israeli occupation forces in front of the world raises many questions about the effectiveness of the human rights system, including the reason why we are witnessing the most horrific crimes without being able to facilitate the entry of aid, to feed the hungry, and to protect hospitals, the sick, medical teams and United Nations facilities and representatives.”

The Ambassador said Oman called on the international community to overcome the state of silence and work to alleviate the impact of the humanitarian crisis and prevent genocide by stopping the supply of weapons to Israel and using political pressure and economic sanctions.

He said the Palestinians should be compensated for the destruction and deaths of defenceless civilians caused by Israel's aggression.
