16 November 2023

The Sultanate of Oman has won a seat on the Executive Board of the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organisation (UNESCO) for the period from 2023 to 2027.

Oman received 159 votes during the 42nd session of the UNESCO General Conference being held in Paris.

The UNESCO Executive Board is one of the organisation's three main constitutional bodies, alongside the General Conference and the Secretariat.

The Executive Board, elected by the General Conference, is responsible for shaping the policies and work programmes of the organisation and studying budget estimates. The Board consists of 58 member states, each serving a four-year term.

Oman's accession to the Executive Board reflects its stature on the international stage and the effectiveness of its diplomatic relations. It demonstrates Oman's strong commitment to cooperating with all member states to achieve common goals in UNESCO's work.

Oman's success enhances its role in actively contributing to the evaluation of UNESCO's work strategies, overseeing its finances and administration. It will help monitor the effectiveness of the organisation's field office programmes to make them more impactful and responsive.

Membership of the UNESCO Executive Board will also provide an opportunity for Oman to showcase its role in promoting a culture of peace and tolerance and to share its successful experiences as a model for achieving sustainable development goals.
