Oman participates in Extraordinary Arab Summit in Cairo

4 March 2025

An Extraordinary Arab Summit was held in Cairo to discuss developments in the Palestinian cause and the Israeli escalation in the Gaza Strip and the West Bank, with leaders and heads of delegations from Arab states attending.

The Omani delegation was led by Foreign Minister Sayyid Badr Albusaidi.

In his speech, the Minister conveyed the greetings of His Majesty Sultan Haitham bin Tarik Al Said to the participating leaders. He expressed deep gratitude to the Arab Republic of Egypt, the State of Palestine and the Kingdom of Bahrain for their efforts in organising this important Arab meeting.

The Summit comes at a time of intensifying challenges, threatening the Palestinian cause and the aspirations of the Palestinian people to achieve justice and establish their independent state on resilient Palestinian land.

In his address, the Minister affirmed that the Sultanate of Oman categorically rejects statements and positions that call for the displacement of Gaza Strip residents under the pretext of “reconstruction”.

Sayyid Badr Albusaidi described such actions as a crime against humanity under international law and international humanitarian law.

He said that the brutal Israeli war has revealed a dark chapter in human history. The conflict has led to tens of thousands of martyrs and injured, along with thousands of missing persons. It has also inflicted enormous destruction on the infrastructure and vital facilities in the Gaza Strip.

The Minister added that Israel continues to violate ceasefire agreements on a daily basis, preventing the delivery of humanitarian aid, and persisting in killing and displacing civilians in Gaza and the West Bank. He said it also continues to confiscate lands and detain Palestinians in numbers far exceeding those it releases.

He noted that a year has passed since the International Court of Justice urged all possible steps to prevent these crimes, yet there has been no genuine commitment from the occupation.

He said that the Gaza Strip, the West Bank and East Jerusalem are Palestinian lands and that the Palestinian people are the rightful owners of the decision regarding their future. He called on the international community to take immediate action to end the historical injustice inflicted on this people, so that they may obtain their fundamental right to freedom and independence.

Sayyid Badr also emphasised the importance of establishing a permanent ceasefire in Gaza and ensuring the safe and full entry of relief and humanitarian materials into the Strip without any conditions or restrictions.

In this context, he stressed the need for an international peace conference that guarantees the implementation of international legitimacy decisions and the Arab Peace Initiative. This conference should be based on a two-state solution and the establishment of an independent Palestinian state with its capital in East Jerusalem on the borders of June 4,  1967, with full membership in the United Nations.

He welcomed the fraternal meeting held between a number of Arab leaders in Riyadh on February 21, 2025, hosted by His Royal Highness Prince Mohammed bin Salman Al Saud, Crown Prince of the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia. This meeting, he said, reflected a united stance in support of justice and the legitimate rights of the Palestinian people.

In concluding his speech, Sayyid Badr Albusaidi commended the efforts made and expressed hope that the summit will lead to practical steps that meet the aspirations of the Arab peoples. He also welcomed the Egyptian plan for the reconstruction of the Gaza Strip, wishing it success and support.

The Omani delegation to the Summit included: Sheikh Khalifa Alharthy, Foreign Ministry Undersecretary for Political Affairs; Abdullah bin Nasser bin Musalam Al Rahbi, Ambassador of the Sultanate of Oman to Egypt and Oman's Representative to League of Arab States, and a number of officials from the Foreign Ministry.
