The Omani Committee for International Humanitarian Law organised a workshop this morning in collaboration with the Muscat mission of the International Committee of the Red Cross.

The workshop was inaugurated by Ambassador Sheikh Humaid Almaani, Head of the Foreign Ministry's Department for Global Affairs and Chairman of the Omani Committee for International Humanitarian Law. Those attending the workshop included committee members from the relevant authorities and representatives of a number of government agencies.

The workshop aimed to raise awareness of the importance of international humanitarian law and to encourage cooperation and the exchange of expertise in humanitarian work and international humanitarian law.

Speaking at the workshop, Sheikh Almaani said: “The displacement and targeting of innocent civilians contravenes the rules of international humanitarian law.”

“Collective punishment by Israel is considered a war crime under international humanitarian law and is one of the worst war crimes,” he added.

“We call on the international community to assume its responsibilities towards innocent Palestinians.”

The workshop covered important topics relating to international humanitarian law, including the principles regulating the use of force, classifying armed conflicts and issues of asylum and displacement.
