Oman at closing session of G20 Summit
Representing His Majesty Sultan Haitham bin Tarik, His Highness Sayyid Asaad bin Tarik Al Said, Deputy Prime Minister for International Relations and Cooperation Affairs and Special Representative of His Majesty the Sultan, headed the delegation of the Sultanate of Oman at the closing session of the G20 summit in the Indian capital New Delhi.
Before the closing session, His Highness and the other heads of delegations visited the Mahatma Gandhi Memorial in New Delhi and placed bouquets of flowers on the monument.
Delivering a speech at the closing session of the 18th summit Sayyid Asaad said that Oman recognises the utmost importance of joint action. He added that Oman agreed with the vision of the Indian presidency of the G20 to build “one future” for human civilisation, especially in light of the challenges to be faced in the coming years.
His Highness said that the Sultanate values the topics discussed including the focus on financing future cities. He said Oman shares the vision of the Indian presidency on the importance of the relevant authorities, especially international financing agencies, to take these endeavours into account when planning and financing infrastructure.
Sayyid Asaad said that digital infrastructure, dedicated to serving everyone, will play an important role in achieving sustainable economic growth, as reflected in the endeavours of the Sultanate. He added that Oman welcomes initiatives that make knowledge available to all and supports the G20's goal to build safe, reliable and well-established principles for the digital economy.
His Highness explained that Oman Vision 2040 gives great importance to education, scientific research and innovation in support of the development goals of the Sultanate. He said Oman Vision 2040 also emphasises sustainable financing for these pivotal sectors, along with investment in human resources, to build a diversified knowledge economy that keeps pace with entrepreneurship and the requirements of the times in order to confront and overcome challenges.
Sayyid Asaad appreciated India's invitation to Oman to participate in the 18th G20 Summit, adding that this indicates of the depth of relations between the two friendly countries. He congratulated India on its successful moon landing, saying this represents a major achievement and a turning point towards a promising future.
His Highness also congratulated the African Union on its membership in the G20.
Closing his speech he sent the best wishes of the Sultanate of Oman to the government of Brazil on assuming the presidency of the G20.
The 18th G20 summit carried the slogan “One Land, One Family, One Future” and focused on the issue of sustainable development, in addition to measures to spread economic growth in a more balanced way between developed and developing countries.
The summit discussed many important issues, including ways to promote green development, financing plans to confront the effects of climate change, the European Union Environment and Climate Action Programme, promoting strong and sustainable economic growth, the progress that has occurred in efforts to implement the United Nations Sustainable Development Plan, technological transformation, digital infrastructure, and institutional efforts to promote international development.
It also focused on various topics, such as loans to developing countries, debt structuring, cryptocurrency regulation and geopolitical tensions.
The Sultanate of Oman took part in the 18th session of the G20 summit thanks to a special invitation from the Republic of India, so consolidating the position of the Sultanate of Oman as an of active partners at the regional and international levels.
