Oman and Germany sign green hydrogen energy agreements
Omani and German companies have signed agreements to deliver green hydrogen to Germany.
Hydrogen Oman (Hydrom) and the German gas infrastructure company VNG signed a memorandum of understanding to examine commercial opportunities and develop a supply chain for green hydrogen and ammonia.
The possibility of a long-term contract for Germany to buy green hydrogen and ammonia and Liquefied Natural Gas from Oman LNG was also examined.
The agreements were made during a meeting in Berlin between Oman's Energy and Minerals Minister, Salem bin Nasser Al Aufi, and Dr Robert Habeck, Germany's Federal Minister for Economic Affairs and Climate Action.
The needs of Germany's energy market and developments in green hydrogen energy solutions were discussed along with ways to use modern technologies to link suppliers with consumers.
In his speech to the Berlin Energy Transition Dialogue conference, the Minister stressed the importance of international cooperation in energy transformation.
He emphasised the importance of compatible standards and certificates for energy and green products and of taking into account the visions of exporting and importing countries.
Dr Firas bin Ali Al Abdwani, Director General of Renewable Energy and Green Hydrogen at the Ministry of Energy and Minerals, said the visit was an opportunity to enhance cooperation, exchange experiences in the energy sector and explore new markets for low-emission hydrogen. He said it was another step to strengthen Oman's position as a major influencer in this vital global sector.
During the visit, Oman's representatives were introduced to the latest technologies and innovations in a number of government agencies, energy companies and heavy industries in Germany. The Director General said these would contribute significantly to enhancing the capabilities of Oman's energy sector.
Abdulaziz Said Al Shidhani, Hydrom's Managing Director, spoke of the importance of the agreement as part of the company's efforts to achieve Oman's goal of developing the green hydrogen sector.
He said the agreement aimed to build on Oman's competitive capabilities to produce and export hydrogen by contributing to the development of an integrated supply chain in addition to creating related industrial sectors based on an advanced and sustainable infrastructure.
The meeting was attended by Pankaj Khimji, Advisor for Foreign Trade and International Cooperation at the Ministry of Trade, Industry and Investment Promotion, Maithaa Saif Majid Al Mahrouqi, Oman's Ambassador to Germany, and a number of energy sector officials.
