Oman and Belgium sign green hydrogen agreements

The Sultanate of Oman and the Kingdom of Belgium today signed a declaration of intent to enhance cooperation between the two countries in the field of green hydrogen and an agreement for a pilot project for green hydrogen certificates for the Duqm Highport project.

The agreements, signed in the Belgian capital Brussels, aim to assess the readiness of green hydrogen production projects in Oman to meet the requirements of the European Union for export to European markets. The agreement was signed by Oman's Energy Minister Salem bin Nasser Al Aufi and the Belgian Energy Minister, Tinne Van der Straeten,

At a meeting yesterday between Minister Al Aufi, Minister Van der Straeten and Maros Sefkovic, Vice-President of the European Commission, Oman and Belgium also discussed aspects of enhancing cooperation and coordination with the European Commission in the regulatory frameworks for clean hydrogen production and transportation projects. They reviewed opportunities to enhance existing cooperation with Belgium in the areas of investment in green hydrogen production, transportation and storage.

The two meetings were also attended by Rua Issa Ashraf Alzadjali, Oman's Ambassador to Belgium and Head of Oman's Mission to the European Union.

During the Minister's visit a series of seminars was also held between the European Commission, Oman and Belgium dealing with the general framework for hydrogen certificates, investment opportunities in supply chains, Belgium's plans for the transition to hydrogen and initiatives supervised by the European Commission to stimulate investment in this sector.
