Oman affirms importance of IAEA's programmes for using atomic energy for peaceful purposes

23 September 2021

The Sultanate has underscored the significance of the activities and programs of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) to use atomic energy for peaceful purposes, adding that this approach contributes to the achievement of sustainable development goals (SDGs).

This was stated in Oman’s speech to the 65th General Assembly of the IAEA held in Vienna. The speech was delivered by Yousef Ahmed Al Jabri, Oman’s Permanent Representative to International Organisations in Vienna.

The Sultanate affirmed its stance on making the Middle East free of weapons of mass destruction, including nuclear arms. “This can be achieved only through the Treaty on the Non-proliferation of Nuclear Weapons (NPT) and the application of the IAEA’s comprehensive safeguards,” said Mr Al Jabri.

He added that the Sultanate also reiterated its support for the creation of a nuclear-weapon-free zone in the Middle East. He stressed that the region must also be free of other mass destruction weapons.

In its speech, Oman laid emphasis on the need to pursue non-proliferation through consensus among countries that will meet during the forthcoming session due to being held under the presidency of Kuwait. The purpose, said Al Jabri, is to reach the goal of mankind living in a peaceful and stable world.
