The Consulate is committed to advancing and strengthening the bilateral relations between Oman and Australia, especially in the education sector.
The Consulate is also working hard to enhance cooperation with various Australian government and private institutions to develop cooperation to the mutual benefit of the two countries.

Bilateral relations
Diplomatic relations between Oman and Australia were established in 1981. Australia appointed an honorary consul in Muscat in December 2011. The Consulate General of Oman opened in Melbourne in June 2005. Since then, the Consulate has been supporting Omani citizens and Omani sponsored students in Australia and New Zealand, who numbered more than 1,000 in 2020.
Oman and Australia have built up valuable cooperation and partnership in the field of defence, represented by mutual military visits and training programmes that are coordinated between the two countries on a regular basis.
The Consulate also has distinguished relations with various institutions of higher education thanks to the implementation of several academic agreements with a range of universities between 2018 to 2020.
In 2003, a chair in Arab and Islamic Studies at Melbourne University, endowed by the Sultan of Oman, was established. It stands as enduring proof of the amity and partnership between Oman and Australia.

The aims of Oman's Consulate in Australia include:
- Promoting and strengthening cultural and educational cooperation between Oman and Australia
- Promoting trade and investment opportunities between the two countries
Cultural and educational cooperation
The Consulate is always keen to implement the strategies of the Ministry of Higher Education, Innovation and Research to strengthen cooperation with various New Zealand and Australian universities. It does this by encouraging partnership among higher education institutions in the three countries through mutual visits and conducting a range of academic and research programmes which can result in academic partnership agreements.
The Sultan of Oman Endowed Chair in Arab and Islamic studies at Melbourne University promotes the Sultanate of Oman’s leading contribution to the promotion of Arab and Islamic civilisation. Through the work of the Chair, Oman aims to contribute to the development of an international academic heritage that benefits all humankind.
Trade and investment
Education, tourism and trade are among the strongest sectors of cooperation between Oman and Australia – the volume of mutual trade is estimated at nearly half a billion Australian Dollars annually.
The Consulate also processes and legalises commercial documents for Australian companies on a daily basis to facilitate the export of goods to Oman.
The Consulate also continuously promotes investment opportunities in Oman in all fields. Australian investment in Oman was estimated to be worth around 100 million Australian Dollars as at the end of 2021.
