Sheikh Alabbas bin Ibrahim Alharthi
Ambassador of the Sultanate of Oman to Malaysia

Bilateral relations

Relations between Oman and Malaysia date back more than 1,000 years to the establishment of the maritime commerce route between Arabia and the Malay archipelago, which fostered the early interactions between the two nations.

Diplomatic relations between the two countries were established on January 15th, 1982, during the reign of His late Majesty Sultan Qaboos bin Said. The establishment of a Malaysian Embassy in Muscat followed in April 1983 at the level of chargé d’affaires and an Omani Embassy was established in Kuala Lumpur in April 1984, also at the level of chargé d’affaires.

The first resident Omani Ambassador to Malaysia presented his credentials to the King of Malaysia in November 1994.

The principles of peaceful co-existence between all peoples, good neighbourliness, non-interference in the internal affairs of others, as well as having a mutual understanding for national sovereignty and international integrity formed the foundation of the foreign policy of His late Majesty Sultan Qaboos.

These wise strategies helped to transform Oman into a modern, progressive nation with a sense of dedication and pride, deeply ingrained in its traditions and rich heritage.

His Majesty Sultan Haitham bin Tarik, a visionary and motivator just like his predecessor, continues to build bridges of friendship with effective foreign policy initiatives. These bridge the gaps between nations, cultures and religions, promoting successful wide-scale intellectual discourse in all areas of economic and developmental relations, in order to meet on common ground.

Trade and investment

Oman and Malaysia enjoy a multi- faceted relationship that covers extensive cooperation in trade and economic matters, as well as in the education tourism, defence and cultural sectors.

Oman’s Vision 2040 initiatives and “Invest Oman” offer excellent opportunities for Malaysian businesses and entrepreneurs to explore a variety of collaborative ventures, sharing knowledge and expertise with lucrative and productive prospects.

These prospects are enhanced by Oman Air’s daily direct flights between Muscat and Kuala Lumpur in both directions.

The Embassy responds to all enquiries regarding tourism and business prospects in both Malaysia and the Sultanate of Oman.
