Oman and Qatar issue joint statement

Text of the joint statement issued on the occasion of the state visit of Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad Al Thani, Emir of the State of Qatar to the Sultanate of Oman on 28 and 29 January, 2025. 

“Based on the deep-rooted historical ties between the Sultanate of Oman and the State of Qatar and the close fraternal bonds between His Majesty Sultan Haitham bin Tarik, Sultan of Oman, and Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad Al Thani, Emir of the State of Qatar, and, with a view to enhancing relations between the two countries, His Majesty the Sultan received Sheikh Tamim, who arrived in the Sultanate of Oman, heading a high-level delegation on a state visit lasting two days on January 28 and 29.

“During the visit, the two countries held extensive bilateral talks in an atmosphere of sincere fraternity. They reviewed the progress of joint action and bilateral cooperation reflecting the depth of existing ties. The two Monarchs praised  the growth of relations and mutual interests and stressed the importance of expanding vistas of cooperation and economic partnership by exploring and developing more opportunities, and encouraging the public and private sectors to diversify areas of economic and investment partnership in a manner that meets the aspirations of the two countries’ peoples.

“The visit saw the signing of a number of memoranda of understanding and executive programmes covering various areas of interest to both sides across a broad range of sectors and domains of partnership.

“The two nations hailed the success of the work of the Oman-Qatar Joint Committee and valued the panel’s active role in enhancing bilateral cooperation and implementing joint projects that serve the interests of the two countries. They also stressed the need to press ahead with the Committee’s efforts to develop new areas of partnership towards the realisation of the two nations’ common aspirations, including economic and investment initiatives to be undertaken by their respective public and private sectors.

“The two leaders discussed the progress of the Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) and the outstanding accomplishments made in terms of joint GCC action, as well as more cohesion, cooperation and integration among member states in the interest of their peoples.

“The two nations also discussed a number of regional and international issues and developments of common concern. In this respect, they stressed the importance of settling conflicts and disputes by peaceful means. They underlined the need to enhance dialogue and international cooperation to support efforts aimed at achieving security and stability in the region and the world at large.

“The two sides laid emphasis on consolidating consultation and intensifying coordination of their stances in a manner that serves their common interests and strengthens the pillars of stability, security and prosperity for all peoples of the region and the world as a whole.

“The two sides expressed the hope that the two parties to the Gaza conflict would commit themselves to fully implement the terms of the agreement reached on the exchange of detainees and prisoners. This, they observed, would pave the way for achieving a just and comprehensive peace in the region, and ultimately lead to a permanent ceasefire between the two parties. They also stressed the importance of collaboration in regional and international efforts to ensure the flow of humanitarian aid to the Gaza Strip and to contribute to its reconstruction.

“Oman commended the role of the State of Qatar and its efforts that contributed to reaching this important agreement as part of Qatar’s mediation shared with the Arab Republic of Egypt and the United States of America. It also applauded the Qatari role in achieving a return to sustainable calm in the region.

“The two nations stressed the significance of respecting the sovereignty, independence and territorial integrity of the Syrian Arab Republic. They called for backing all efforts to reach a comprehensive and inclusive transitional process that would realise the Syrian people’s aspirations for stability, development and decent life. They reiterated that Syria's security and stability constitute a fundamental pillar of stability in the region.

“The two nations welcomed the steps taken to ensure the safety of civilians in Syria, to stop the bloodshed, toachieve national interests and to safeguard the Syrian state’s institutions and capabilities.

“At the conclusion of the visit, Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad Al Thani expressed his sincere thanks and appreciation to His Majesty Sultan Haitham bin Tarik for the warm welcome and hospitality accorded to him and his accompanying delegation. Reciprocally, His Majesty Sultan Haitham bin Tarik expressed his best wishes of continued health and wellbeing to Sheikh Tamim. He wished the State of Qatar and the Qatari people further progress and prosperity.”
