Oman at Non-Aligned Movement Summit
On a directive of His Majesty Sultan Haitham bin Tarik, Sheikh Abdulmalik bin Abdullah Al Khalili, Chairman of the State Council, chaired the delegation of the Sultanate of Oman today at the 19th Summit of Heads of State and Government of the Non-Aligned Movement.
The summit is being held in the Ugandan capital, Kampala, with the participation of more than 148 leaders of countries and governments, as well as heads of international organisations.
Sheikh Abdulmalik conveyed the greetings of His Majesty and his sincere wishes for the success of the summit.
In Oman's statement to the conference, the Chairman of the State Council affirmed the Sultanate's steadfast commitment to the peaceful settlement of conflicts based on the principles of international law and the United Nations Charter, aiming to achieve justice, harmony, security and peace for all.
He said that Oman continues to support the legitimate rights of the Palestinian people, including the establishment of their independent state with its capital in East Jerusalem, in accordance with international legitimacy based on the borders of June 4th, 1967.
Sheikh Abdulmalik called on the international community to fulfill its responsibilities in ensuring international security and peace and to halt the continued aggression of Israeli occupation forces in Gaza, as well as their ongoing atrocities in the occupied Palestinian territories. He called on the international community to hold Israel accountable for its blatant violations of international and humanitarian law.
He noted that the summit's theme, “Deepening Cooperation for Common Global Prosperity,” reflects a comprehensive vision for sustainable development and progress to ensure the well-being of peoples.
The Chairman of the State Council said that Oman is committed to its ongoing development plans to achieve this noble goal, sustain the quality of life and to enhance the well-being of individuals and communities.
He called for increased international cooperation and a shared commitment to achieving a balance between development and environmental requirements. He added that this was necessary to ensure sustainability for current and future generations and to strengthen collective capabilities to address regional and global challenges and the vicissitudes of life.
Sheikh Abdulmalik said Oman recognises the importance of cooperation in building partnerships, scientific research, development and sharing experiences to achieve solidarity and social justice. He added that the summit of the Non-Aligned Movement can address issues of global concern.
The Chairman of the State Council, said that we live in a world facing major political, security, economic, environmental, and climatic challenges. He called for cooperation and positive interaction in addressing these shared challenges, working with an open and constructive spirit towards a more just and peaceful world.
The Summit is discussing the importance of economic cooperation among the member countries of the Movement, as well as enhancing cooperation in areas related to energy security, the environment, healthcare and labour in order to promote the interests of member countries.
