Foreign Minister delivers Oman's speech to UN General Assembly
Foreign Minister Sayyid Badr Albusaidi, delivered this evening (September 23rd) the Sultanate of Oman’s speech to the seventy-eighth session of the United Nations General Assembly in New York.
In the speech, Sayyid Badr said that dialogue is a fixed principle of the foreign policy of the Sultanate of Oman and is central to its approach.
He appealed to the international community to follow the United Nations system in addressing conflicts and settling conflicts by pursuing dialogue as a path to peaceful solutions.
The Minister said the Palestinian cause was an injustice that had continued for 70 years and therefore stands at the forefront of enduring conflicts. He paid tribute to the resilience of the Palestinian people in standing against “oppressive Israeli occupation, siege and oppression.”
Sayyid Badr said Oman sees no alternative to the resolution of the Palestinian cause other than the two-state solution outlined in international legal references and resolutions, including the Arab Peace Initiative.
“The United Nations bears a moral and legal responsibility to find a just and equitable solution to this
issue,” he added.
On the Russian-Ukrainian crisis, the Minister said the war constitutes a serious threat to global peace. He said Oman calls for dialogue and peaceful negotiations “respecting the sovereignty of nations, good neighbourly relations and addressing the root causes of this crisis.”
Sayyid Badr also spoke of Oman Vision 2040 and how it serves as a gateway for Oman towards sustainable development.
He said Oman is working to promote investment in renewable energy as it works towards carbon neutrality by 2050, adding that the Sultanate is committed to participating actively in the COP 28 Climate change conference in the United Aran Emirates.
Addressing the COVID-19 Pandemic, the Minister called on all countries to promote partnerships in research, innovation, and manufacturing to develop preventive and curative alternatives to mitigate the effects of pandemics and prevent their spread.
The Minister said that the Sultanate is committed to upholding human rights and adhering to relevant international charters and agreements to develop a just international society that respects human dignity.
He added that Oman condemns all incitement to violence, hatred, and discrimination based on religion or ethnicity, calling on the international community “to establish clear legislation to criminalise actions that threaten peace, social stability, national security, and communities.”
Concluding Oman's speech, the Minister said the world is facing complex challenges on many fronts.
“Therefore, ” he said, “we appeal to the international community firmly to uphold the principles of justice and fairness and apply the rules of international law without double standards, so that security and confidence prevail among people, trust grows among nations, and partnerships flourish between people.”
