Final statement of GCC Supreme Council commends Oman
The final statement issued at the conclusion of the 45th session of the Supreme Council of the Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) held in Kuwait, welcomed the continued efforts by the Sultanate of Oman and the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia, in coordination with all Yemeni parties, to revive the political process.
The ‘Kuwait Declaration' reaffirmed the GCC leaders’ demand to end war crimes in Gaza, stop the displacement of its population and end the Israeli occupation of Palestinian territories. It reiterated their steadfast support for the Palestinian cause, recognising the sovereignty of the Palestinian people over all territories occupied since June 1967, and the establishment of an independent Palestinian state with East Jerusalem as its capital.
The statement highlighted the growing role of the GCC states in addressing political, security, and economic challenges, both regionally and globally. It praised their contributions to resolving issues that threaten peace, security and stability, as well as to promoting international dialogue and to fostering communication among peoples.
The GCC leaders called for intensified efforts to solidify this role and to enhance the region’s standing as a global economic and business hub. They also emphasized the importance of sustainable economic diversification, digital transformation, energy market stability and effective climate change response.
The statement noted the GCC leaders’ welcome of the resolutions from the Extraordinary Arab Islamic Summit hosted by Saudi Arabia on November 11, 2024, which aimed to bolster international action to stop the war on Gaza and achieve lasting and comprehensive peace through the implementation of the two state solution based on the Arab Peace Initiative.
The leaders also praised efforts to rally international support for recognising the State of Palestine and leading a global coalition to implement the two state solution. They also commended and appreciated Qatar’s efforts to broker a ceasefire in Gaza and facilitating the exchange of detainees.
The GCC leaders condemned the ongoing Israeli aggression against Lebanon and warned of the consequences of its continuation and the potential expansion of the conflict. They said this would have dire implications for the region's peoples as well as for international peace and security.
The ‘Kuwait Declaration' welcomed the temporary ceasefire agreement in Lebanon, expressing the hope that it would be a step towards ending the conflict, ensuring Israel’s withdrawal from Lebanese territories, implementing UN Security Council Resolution 1701 and enabling displaced persons to return to their homes.
The leaders expressed their full solidarity with the Lebanese people, acknowledging Kuwait's efforts and the GCC’s initiative on Lebanon. They urged Lebanese parties to prioritise national interests, to emphasize a political path to resolve disputes, and to strengthen Lebanon's historic role in preserving Arab national security and cultural identity.
