Oman and Iran emphasise strengthening cooperation
The Sultanate of Oman and the Islamic Republic of Iran affirmed their keenness to strengthen their cooperative relations based on the principle of good neighbourliness, positive cooperation and joint effort.
They reiterated their determination to address and find peaceful solutions to the issues and developments in the region.
The comments were made at a joint press conference by Oman's Foreign Minister Sayyid Badr Albusaidi and his Iranian counterpart Dr Hossein Amir Abdollahian at the Foreign Ministry in Muscat.
Sayyid Badr said Oman backed efforts to reduce escalation in the region and address various issues and conflicts. The voice of wisdom needs to be heard, he added. He also said the priority was to address the suffering of the Palestinian people caused by the ongoing Israeli attack on Gaza and other occupied Palestinian territories.
The Foreign Minister said it was of the utmost importance to establish a permanent and comprehensive solution to the Palestinian issue which has been approved by international law and UN Security Council resolutions.
That meant the establishment of an independent Palestinian state and the world’s recognition of its international borders of 1967 with East Jerusalem as its capital.
He said: “We will continue our efforts with our brothers and friends, which are based on the principle of peace, which is the basis of stability and prosperity for all peoples and for the entire world, until this hostile war launched by the Israeli occupation forces on the Gaza Strip stops and we follow up on the efforts undertaken by various parties of the international community.”
The Minister said the meeting with his Iranian counterpart represented an opportunity to exchange views and consult and coordinate regarding the various developments taking place in the region. They examined ways of working together to reduce escalation and for wisdom to prevail in their tireless attempts to find successful solutions to issues and conflicts.
Sayyid Badr said the visit of Dr Hossein Amir Abdollahian was a follow-up to the results of the visit of His Majesty Sultan Haitham bin Tarik Al Said to Iran and the visit of the Iranian President Dr Ebrahim Raisi to Oman.
It came as a continuation and extension of consultation and cooperation between the two countries especially in the field of trade and investment.
Iran's Foreign Minister thanked His Majesty for the initiative launched to lift the sanctions imposed by the United States of America and for Oman's efforts to support stability in the region.
He said relations between Oman and Iran were developing steadily in all fields as the volume of trade between them had increased by two and a half times over the past year. He said activating the North-South corridor was in the interest of both countries.
He added: “We are holding consultations with the Sultanate of Oman at the highest level regarding taking important positions in the region and the world. There is agreement between the two sides on the necessity of stopping the war and genocide in Gaza immediately.”
He said the attack on the Iranian consulate building in Damascus was an expansion of the scope of war in the region.
