Delegated by His Majesty, Energy Minister participates in COP27 Summit
Delegated by His Majesty Sultan Haitham bin Tarik, Engineer Salim Nassir Al Aufi, Minister of Energy and Minerals, took part in the opening of the 27th session of the Conference of the Parties to the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (COP27).
The session is being held in the Egyptian city of Sharm El Sheikh from November 6th to 18th, 2022.
The Minister said that the Sultanate of Oman’s participation in this important event stems from its conviction of the importance of endorsing coordinated measures, in partnership with the world, to reduce global warming to levels below 2°C; that is to say an endorsement of the Paris Agreement of November 2016, signed by 196 countries
Eng. Al Aufi added that the pact also aims to achieve a climate-emission-neutral world by the middle of this century, as various countries have pledged to provide nationally-determined contributions in order to ensure energy transition and mitigated emissions.
He added that Oman has taken a major step forward to reduce its carbon emissions by its official commitment to achieve carbon neutrality by 2050; by establishing the Oman Sustainability Centre, based on the results of the work of the Carbon Management Laboratory; by announcing the launch of a national strategy for an orderly transition to carbon neutrality and by the launch of the National Environmental Policy for Energy.
The Minister recently announced the start of the pre-qualification phase for investors wishing to participate in the first round of investment opportunities in green hydrogen production projects through Hydrom (the Hydrogen Oman Company).
Oman's pavilion at the conference is a forum for the discussion of climate change, carbon neutrality, investment in the green energy sector and other related topics.
The summit is part of the UN Framework Convention on Climate Change, an international treaty signed by most countries of the world with the aim of reducing the impact of human activity on the climate. The participating countries pledged to return to the meeting this year, to agree on further reductions in the rates of greenhouse gas and carbon dioxide emissions in a manner that keeps the rise in global temperatures to less than 2°C.
The conference envisages four main goals: mitigation, adaptation, finance and the cooperation of countries concerned to help limit global warming to less than 2°C while keeping the 1.5°C target alive.
Oman is focussed on energy transformation to reduce carbon emissions, along with the rest of the world. It is also working to promote local value-added policies, to localise industries related to the renewable energy and hydrogen sectors, to enable strategic studies, research and development and to enhance community awareness of clean energy.
