Bilateral relations
The Sultanate of Oman and the United Republic of Tanzania have close and distinguished relations in many political, cultural and economic fields.
Since the Omani embassy opened in Dar es Salaam in 2008, relations between Oman and Tanzania have witnessed further development.
This is demonstrated by the many visits exchanged between representatives of the two governments.
The latest of these was the historic visit of President Samia Salho Hassan to Oman and her meeting with His Majesty Sultan Haitham bin Tarik on May 13th, 2022.
Consular services
The Embassy of the Sultanate of Oman in Dar es Salaam provides a range of services to both Omani and Tanzanian citizens and foreigners residing in Tanzania who wish to visit the Sultanate of Oman for tourism or business. These services include:
Political and diplomatic cooperation
Political relations are in constant development and there is notable activity in the exchange of visits between officials of the two governments.
The Omani-Tanzanian Committee meets alternately in the two countries since it was established in October 2009 to discuss relations and issues of common interest.
Trade and investment
The Oman Investment Authority office in Dar es Salaam opened in 2015 and is concerned with all Omani investments in Tanzania.
Oman and Tanzania have signed a number of agreements and memoranda of understanding (MoU) in the field of trade and investment. These include:
- MoU in the field of energy (June 13th, 2022)
- MoU between the Oman Investment Authority and the Zanzibar Investment Promotion Authority (June 13th, 2022)
- MoU in the field of tourism and natural resources (June 13th, 2022)
- Agreement on the encouragement and reciprocal protection of investment (October 16th, 2013)
- Tanzania Business Council (2012)
- Agreement establishing the Omani-Tanzania Joint Committee (October 2009)
Cultural, educational and scientific exchange
There are a number of agreements between Oman and Tanzania in the cultural and educational fields. Mutual visits are frequent.
These ties include cooperation between the Omani and Tanzanian National Museums and Museums in Zanzibar.
Tourism in Tanzania
Tanzania is characterised by enormous potential for tourists thanks to its geographical location overlooking the Indian Ocean.
Tanzania’s rich assets include its wide sandy beaches, rich in coral reefs, its mild weather and its abundant forests, swamps and lakes.
Among the most important cities and tourist areas are:
Zanzibar
One of the largest islands of Tanzania, it was ruled by Omani Arabs for nearly a thousand years. It is famous for its beautiful beaches and houses of Oriental and Indo-African architecture, including the House of Wonders, the Sayed Barghash Palace and Bait Matoni.
Pemba Island
Known as the Green Island it is the second largest of the Zanzibar archipelago, located off the eastern coast of Africa overlooking the Indian Ocean.
It is a fertile land, famous for the cultivation of cloves. It is estimated that there are three million clove trees on Pemba. The history of clove cultivation dates back to the beginning of the nineteenth century when Omani Arabs came to rule Zanzibar.
Serengeti Reserve
One of the largest nature reserves in northwest Tanzania it extends to the borders of Kenya and has many wild animals.
Lake Victoria
One of great African lakes and the largest lake in Africa, with an area of 68,870 km.
Mount Kilimanjaro
The highest peak in the African continent with a height of 5,895 metres.
General tips for visitors to Tanzania
- Visitors can obtain a one-month tourist visa on arrival at the airport, or they can apply for a visa through the official Tanzania eVisa website.
- Visitors must be vaccinated against yellow fever. They should bring a vaccination certificate issued by the health authorities, as it must be presented to the authorities at the airport.
- It is preferable not to photograph popular markets and local residents without obtaining prior permission from them.
- The export of any animal products such as ivory or wild animal skins and meat is prohibited. It is also prohibited to export souvenirs made from animal bones or stuffed animals without purchase documents or necessary licences.
