Political and diplomatic cooperation

The two countries share a similar vision regarding the importance of maintaining security and prosperity in the Indo-Pacific and Middle East regions.

Due to their strategic locations in the Indian Ocean, Oman and Australia are founding members of the Indian Ocean Rim Association (IORA).

They work closely with other member states to ensure maritime security in the region and foster socio economic growth that preserves marine resources.

Through the Embassy, Oman also aims to strengthen diplomatic ties with Pacific Island countries and establish new trade and investment links.

Trade and investment

Oman and Australia enjoy strong trade ties.

Australia is a key exporter of aluminium ore, meat, wheat, and barley to Oman, while Oman exports fertilisers and petroleum products to Australia.

In 2023, the total bilateral trade in goods and services between Australia and Oman was approximately AUD 828 million.

Both nations are keen to diversify their economies and welcome foreign investments, with many Australian companies active in Oman and vice versa.

Inspired by Oman Vision 2040, the Omani Embassy in Australia promotes investment opportunities in renewable energy, green hydrogen, net zero emissions technologies, the blue/ocean economy and artificial intelligence.

There are also significant opportunities for cooperation in tourism, hospitality and scientific collaboration in agriculture and fisheries.

Cultural, educational and scientific exchanges

Oman has signed numerous agreements and partnerships with Australian institutions to encourage academic and research cooperation through exchange visits and joint academic programmes.

The number of Omani students studying in Australia and New Zealand, pursuing academic studies and research fellowships is increasing annually.

The Sultan of Oman Chair in Arab and Islamic Studies at the University of Melbourne, established in 2003, stands as a testament to the deep friendship and cultural ties between the two nations, promoting Arab and Islamic civilisation internationally.
