Mr Amit Narang assumed charge as Ambassador of India to the Sultanate of Oman on October 24, 2021.
Prior to this appointment, Ambassador Narang headed the Indian Ocean Region (IOR) Division of India’s Ministry of External Affairs (MEA), handling India’s bilateral relations with its key maritime neighbours.
Ambassador Narang has served as the Chief Vigilance Officer of the MEA and was also in charge of India’s consular and visa policy, dealing with interventions aimed at the welfare of India’s overseas diaspora.
Ambassador Narang is a member of the Indian Foreign Service (IFS) since 2001 and started his career in the MEA with a stint in the External Publicity Division, dealing with Indian and foreign media.
As part of his career in the Indian Foreign Service, Ambassador Narang obtained an Advanced Diploma in Chinese language and has served twice in the People’s Republic of China – from 2003 to 2007 when he worked on bilateral economic and commercial relations, and again from 2016 to 2018 when he served as the Deputy Head of Mission in the Embassy of India, Beijing.
Ambassador Narang has extensive experience in multilateral diplomacy. He was India’s lead negotiator at the United Nations for the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development and Addis Ababa Action Agenda.
Ambassador Narang handled the United Nations portfolio in the MEA from 2010 to 2013 and worked as Counsellor at the Permanent Mission of India to the United Nations in New York from 2013 to 2016.
During this time, he was a member of the Indian negotiating team for climate change, representing India in the meetings of the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC) in Cancun (Mexico), Durban (South Africa), Doha (Qatar), Lima (Peru) and Paris (France), culminating in the adoption of the Paris Agreement (COP21) in 2015.
During his tenure in New York, Ambassador Narang was also closely associated with the adoption of the landmark UN Resolution designating June 21 as International Yoga Day.
Ambassador Narang is a Fellow of Ananta Aspen Centre’s Kamalnayan Bajaj Fellowship and a member of the Aspen Institute’s Global Leadership Network.
Ambassador Narang’s interests include photography, bird watching, sports and a love for languages, history and culture.
Born on January 28, 1975, Ambassador Narang is married to Mrs. Divya Narang and they have two children.
