Bilateral relations

Diplomatic relations between the Sultanate of Oman and the Republic of Ethiopia were established in February 1995 and the Sultanate's Embassy in Addis Ababa opened in 2017. Since then, the Embassy has been working through Oman’s Foreign Ministry to enhance cooperation between the two countries.

The Embassy encourages reciprocal visits to cement cooperation between the two countries. Such activities have a great impact on improving bilateral relations, helping to promote the interests of both countries.

In line with Oman's Vision 2040 and the Sultanate's foreign policies, the Embassy focuses on a number of goals. It seeks to advance relations between the two countries, especially those related to the economy and trade and to find mechanisms that contribute to this goal.

The Chargé d'Affaires submitted his credentials as Head of the Mission to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Ethiopia on July 29th, 2021.

Relations with the African Union

  • In 2017, the Sultanate of Oman joined the African Union Commission as a permanent observer, like other non-African countries, to keep up to date with activities taking place in the Commission.
  • The Sultanate has long standing relations with East African countries. These relations have contributed positively to enhancing the volume of trade between the ports of Oman and Africa.
  • The Chargé d'Affaires submitted his credentials on September 14th, 2021 to the Chairperson of the Commission as Head of Mission and Oman’s Permanent Observer.

The Embassy offers a range of consular services both to Omani citizens visiting Ethiopia and to Ethiopian citizens or residents wishing to visit Oman for tourism or business purposes. These services cover:

Oman and Ethiopia are working to build bilateral relations in all political and diplomatic aspects.

Trade and investment

In Feb 2020, the Oman Chamber of Commerce & Industry signed a Memorandum of Understanding with the Addis Ababa Chamber of Commerce to support trade and investment,

The Embassy is working to spread awareness of Oman Vision 2040, as well as the favourable tax regulations and foreign investment laws that make Oman an attractive business destination for Ethiopian investors. For further information, please click here.
