Launch of Oman's first hydrogen filling station
The first hydrogen station in the Sultanate of Oman was launched by Oman Shell to advance sustainable mobility in the country.
The station is located near Muscat International Airport and offers services such as fast charging for electric vehicles, and conventional fueling options. It relies on solar electrolysis technology to produce up to 130 kg of green hydrogen per day.
The chief guest at the opening ceremony was Salim Nasser Alaufi, Minister of Energy and Minerals.
The Minister said this important initiative, represents the first green hydrogen vehicle supply station in Oman, and is a significant step towards sustainability and diversification of energy sources. It also reflects the government’s commitment to implementing the vision of His Majesty Sultan Haitham bin Tarik to make Oman a leading centre in the field of green hydrogen and an important step towards achieving carbon neutrality by 2050.
The Minister explained that the project is based on integrating renewable solar energy, local hydrogen production, advanced mobility technologies, and the great potential of hydrogen systems to attract investment and support future technologies.
Walid Hadi, Shell Country Manager in Oman, said that the project is the result of cooperation with Mwasalat, and the Namaa Power and Water Procurement Company. He highlighted the importance of partnerships in accelerating the transition to sustainable energy solutions.
Badr Mohammed Alnadabi, CEO of Mwasalat, said that the company will add 15 hydrogen-powered vehicles to its fleet, marking a shift towards environmentally friendly transportation and enhanced services in partnership with public and private sectors.
Ahmed Salem Alabri, CEO of Namaa Power and Water Procurement, explained that the company will provide 7,000 international renewable energy certificates to Oman Shell by 2029, with 1,400 certificates issued annually. So far, 250,000 certificates have been sold locally, and over 3 million are expected to be issued in 2025.
Dr Mohammed Mahmoud Albalushi, CEO of Shell Marketing, emphasised the role of renewable energy in accelerating the transition towards sustainable mobility. He noted that launching Oman’s first green hydrogen station is an important achievement, that reflects the company’s commitment to transforming the energy sector. This achievement demonstrates the potential of green hydrogen to enhance the mobility sector and establish the groundwork for a flexible, low carbon transportation system.
