Budapest: Award of 2024 Sultan Qaboos Environmental Prize
On His Majesty's Service, Dr Madiha bint Ahmed Al Shaibaniyah, Minister of Education and Chairperson of the Oman National Commission for Education, Culture and Science, presented the UNESCO Sultan Qaboos Prize for Environmental Conservation for 2024 to the Namib Desert Environmental Education Trust (NaDEET) from Namibia. The ceremony took place in Budapest, Hungary, based on the recommendation of the prize jury.
The award was granted to NaDEET in recognition of its exceptional efforts in environmental education in the Namib Desert as a non-profit educational trust. Since its establishment, the Trust has delivered environmental education programmes in various locations, targeting more than 160,000 Namibian school students, university students, teachers and other members of civil society.
NaDEET has significantly contributed to environmental conservation through its environmental education centres, where Namibians learn practical solutions to local and national environmental challenges through hands on activities.
The award presentation ceremony was held during the World Science Forum, organised by the Hungarian Academy of Sciences in collaboration with UNESCO.
The event was attended by Hungarian President Dr Tamás Sulyok; Xing Qu, Deputy Director-General of UNESCO, several Ministers from participating countries and representatives of numerous academic and scientific institutions from around the world.
