Oman at International Conference on Design Law Treaty
The Sultanate of Oman is participating in the International Diplomatic Conference on the Adoption of the Design Law Treaty, which has begun in Riyadh, the capital of Saudi Arabia, and will continue until November 22.
The Treaty will help designers to secure easier, faster and more affordable protection for their designs at both local and international levels.
The Omani delegation is headed by Ambassador Idris Alkhanjari, Oman's Permanent Representative to the United Nations and International Organisations in Geneva.
In his statement, he expressed his gratitude to Saudi Arabia for their warm welcome, generous hospitality and the excellent organisation of the conference.
He said Oman is committed to supporting international efforts to adopt the Design Law Treaty, highlighting its importance to improving protection for designs and to managing intellectual property rights worldwide. The exchange of knowledge and expertise and the coordination of efforts among member states will ensure the treaty's effectiveness and the achievement of its objectives, he added.
The Ministry of Commerce, Industry, and Investment Promotion is currently collaborating with the World Intellectual Property Organisation (WIPO) by following the proceedings of the permanent committee meetings and working groups of the organisation. It also coordinates technical cooperation activities from which Oman benefits in all areas related to intellectual property rights and related topics.
The Riyadh conference was attended by the Director of Oman's office to the World Trade Organisation in Geneva, along with participants from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and the National Intellectual Property Office, as well as representatives from more than 190 countries.
Ambassador Alkhanjari spoke of the importance that Oman places on the protection of industrial designs as they contribute to economic development, increased investment returns, enhanced product branding and the encouragement of innovation. This is demonstrated in the Royal Decrees and laws enacted by Oman to strengthen the protection of industrial designs, he added.
The Ambassador said Oman remained ready to cooperate with member states to reach a fair and balanced treaty to protect the rights of current and future designers and creators.
