Oman starts exporting fish products to China

9 November 2024

A group of Omani companies specialising in marketing and selling fish have begun exporting fish products to the People's Republic of China.

The move, which represents an important step towards achieving the goals of Oman Vision 2040 in the fisheries sector, is part of an initiative launched by the Ministry of Agricultural, Fisheries Wealth and Water Resources, which aims to increase the value of Omani fish products and expand their international reach.

Dr Masoud Al Azri, Director General of Agricultural and Fisheries Marketing at the Ministry, explained that this progress follows an agreement reached between the governments of the Sultanate of Oman and China.

Dr Al Azri said that the first phase of exports demonstrates the quality of Omani fish products and their compliance with international health standards.

23 Omani companies have obtained the necessary quality certifications from the Ministry and relevant Chinese regulatory bodies. Only companies that meet the strict export standards to China have received these certifications. More companies may be registered once they meet the required health standards. Regular inspections will be conducted to ensure that Omani facilities in the fish sector adhere to these standards and maintain their competitiveness in the global market.

This export initiative is expected to enhance economic cooperation between the Sultanate of Oman and China, open new trade opportunities and support food security. Access to the Chinese market adds significant value to Oman's exports, strengthening the Sultanate's position as a reliable exporter of high-quality fish products.

Fish production in the Sultanate of Oman reached approximately 800,000 tonnes in 2023, an increase of 6% compared to the previous year, with a value exceeding 530 million Omani rials.

Omani fish exports amounted to around 325,000 tonnes, valued at approximately 190 million Omani rials.
