Oman at Arab League emergency meeting on Lebanon

3 October 2024

The Sultanate of Oman took part in an emergency meeting of permanent representatives to the Arab League, chaired by the Republic of Yemen, to discuss the Arab movement's solidarity with Lebanon.

Oman was represented by Abdullah bin Nasser Al Rahbi, Oman's Ambassador to the Arab Republic of Egypt and Oman’s Permanent Representative to the Arab League. He affirmed Oman's full solidarity with Lebanon, calling for restraint and the respect of international law in order to spare the region the dangers of war.

The Ambassador said that Lebanon is currently facing a multi-dimensional threat, which includes a humanitarian crisis, resulting from what is likely to be the largest displacement of people in Lebanon’s modern history. He added that the humanitarian crisis in Lebanon requires an effective and swift response to provide essential aid to civilians.

He said that the Israeli occupation of Palestinian territories, which has so far lasted for more than seventy years, is the main cause of the continued conflict and violence in the region. He added that this occupation obstructs any genuine efforts to protect the peoples' right to security.

The Ambassador also highlighted the need for the international community to fulfil its will by granting the Palestinian people their right to self-determination and establishing their independent state along the June 4, 1967 borders, with East Jerusalem as its capital, stressing that this is a fundamental step towards restoring stability and peace in the region.

A statement issued by the meeting reaffirmed the Arab League's full support for UNRWA and other international organisations, which are facing political pressure aimed at distorting their image and obstructing their humanitarian, legal and political roles, which they are trying to fulfil in line with international law and UN resolutions. The Council supported the positions of UN Secretary General António Guterres, who has been declared persona non grata by Israel, a move unprecedented in history..

The statement condemned Israeli attacks, actions and statements against international organisations and institutions. It noted that Israeli aggressions against the Arab territories in Palestine, Lebanon, Syria and Yemen have led to the destruction of these organisation's facilities and caused many casualties among their personnel.

During its meeting, the Arab League agreed on a strong condemnation of the ongoing barbaric Israeli aggression against Lebanon, highlighting how dangerous it is and warning against the results any incursion or occupation of Lebanese territory. The League said it considers such actions to be an attack on Arab national security.
