Oman at Permanent Delegates meeting of Arab League

Oman at extraordinary session of Arab League

3 April 2024

Oman took part today in an extraordinary session of the Arab League Council at the level of permanent representatives.

The meeting discussed Arab and international efforts to stop the crime of genocide against the Palestinian people as well as  the policy of starvation and displacement inflicted on them. It also discussed the responsibility of the Security Council and the international community in the light of Israel's occupation.

Ambassador Abdullah bin Nasser Al Rahbi, The Sultanate's Ambassador to Egypt and its Permanent Representative to the Arab League spoke for Oman at the meeting.

He said: “We meet today amidst a dangerous and developing escalation in events, where the circle of war in the region has expanded, centred around the Israeli aggression on the Gaza Strip. These events confirm that the occupying state feels it is guaranteed impunity and non-accountability. This is further evidenced by its blatant disregard for the United Nations Security Council resolution calling for a cease fire.”

He said he regretted the international community's failure up to this moment to stop Israel on both political and military levels, and supported the Arab consensus around the resolution calling on the Security Council to take action under Chapter VII of the United Nations Charter.

He reiterated Oman's steadfast position that the only solution to the conflict lies in addressing its causes and motives, starting with recognising an independent Palestinian state and the withdrawal of Israeli occupation forces from all occupied Palestinian territories and all other Arab territories.

Ambassador Al Rahbi emphasised that the establishment of a Palestinian state is a necessary and existential requirement. Without it, he said, the world condemns the Palestinian people to a constant threat of poverty, genocide and death.

He confirmed Oman's stated position that an international conference is urgently needed to bring together international parties to reach executive agreements to achieve a rapid and effective solution. The prime objective should be to outline a practical vision for the establishment of a Palestinian state and to specify mechanisms for its implementation. The conference should include all components of Palestinian society without exception, he added.
