Ambassador of the Sultanate of Oman to the Republic of Iraq

Bilateral relations

The long-standing relations between Oman and Iraq have linked the two countries since ancient times. The foundations of these relations were laid in the Umayyad era and friendly ties between the two countries continued to grow over time, especially during the era of Imam Saeed and his son Ahmed, when commercial transactions between Muscat and Basra witnessed spectacular growth.

When al-Sayyid Sultan took over power in 1792 he worked on strengthening the range of  commercial exchanges with Basra and today bilateral relations between the two countries have reached an advanced stage.

Political and diplomatic cooperation

The Sultanate of Oman and the Republic of Iraq enjoy strong relations characterised by cooperation in all important interests. Bilateral confidence and respect are the key elements of these relations.

This leads to the exchange of viewpoints, bilateral support in different fields and coordination and consultation on international and regional matters.

The Omani Embassy in Iraq resumed its services on October 15th, 2019. Political consultations led by Undersecretaries of the two Foreign Ministries were held in Muscat in late December of that year.

Officials of the two fraternal countries have since exchanged visits, with the two sides discussing and signing numerous agreements and memoranda of understanding in various fields.

Trade and investment

The Embassy's work focuses on enhancing cooperation in trade and investment. It seeks to increase the volume of commercial exchanges between the two countries to the highest possible level.

The Embassy works to consolidate the role of Oman’s ports as the key element in building beneficial, sustainable investment and commercial partnerships between the two parties.

The Embassy is also focussed on making companies and business leaders aware of Oman Vision 2040, Oman’s tax system and its foreign capital investment law which together make the Sultanate an attractive business location.

Cultural, educational and scientific exchanges

Educational and cultural aspects are among the most significant elements in enhancing bilateral relationships. Strong cultural ties have connected the people of the two countries since ancient times.

Oman hosts a sizeable Iraqi community with Iraqi cadres benefitting in the medical and educational fields.

There are many exchange visits and invitations to participate in exhibitions, music and arts festivals, as well as exchanges in the field of literary and artistic translation.
