Oman at G77-China Summit in Cuba
On His Majesty's service, Oman's Foreign Minister Sayyid Badr Albusaidi, headed the delegation of the Sultanate of Oman to the Summit of the G77 countries and China in the Cuban capital, Havana.
This year’s summit discussed current development issues and the importance of science, technology, innovation and cooperation to tackle shared challenges such as climate change, poverty and energy security and how to achieve the 2030 sustainable development goals. The Summit also discussed mechanisms to enhance joint cooperation and so help meet the aspirations of all countries.
At the start of his speech to the summit, Sayyid Badr conveyed the greetings of His Majesty Sultan Haitham bin Tarik to Dr Miguel Diaz Canel Bermudez, President of the Republic of Cuba and to the participating leaders, along with His Majesty's best wishes for the success of the Summit. Sayyid Badr also conveyed the wishes of His Majesty to the friendly Cuban people for growth and prosperity.
Sayyid Badr went on to say that the significant progress in the field of artificial intelligence represents a pivotal opportunity that opens doors to great potential for economic and social improvements.
“We know that achieving this requires effective international cooperation, including the exchange of knowledge and technology, and establishing frameworks to ensure the responsible and sustainable use of artificial intelligence, strengthening institutional systems and their various structures,” he added.
He also spoke of the importance of multilateral international cooperation and the need to exert concerted efforts for the development of strategies and executive mechanisms to achieve sustainable development.
“This is the way to enable our world to close the economic gap between developed and developing countries, and achieve sustainable development for all,” he said.
The Summit was attended by leaders of countries from around the world, including heads of state, heads of government, and representatives international bodies and organisations.
The Group of 77 (G77) was established on June 15th 1964 by seventy-seven developing countries who signed a joint declaration issued at the end of the first session of the United Nations Conference on Trade and Development (UNCTAD) in Geneva.
The G77 is the largest intergovernmental organisation of developing countries in the United Nations. It provides the means for the countries of the South to articulate and promote their collective economic interests and enhance their joint negotiating capacity on all major international economic issues within the United Nations system and to promote South-South development cooperation.
